
The Greatest Success of Explosion Safety Is the One You Never See
Everyone has seen the dramatic images of industrial explosions. They make headlines, trigger investigations and often lead to valuable lessons. Yet the greatest achievement in explosion safety is the event that never happens.
A facility that operates safely for twenty or thirty years—without an explosion, without a major incident and without unplanned downtime—rarely attracts attention. Yet this is anything but coincidence. It is the result of sound engineering, a high-quality risk assessment, the correct selection of equipment, professional installation, periodic inspections, effective maintenance and disciplined management of change throughout the entire lifecycle of the installation.
Explosion safety is therefore not a one-time milestone that ends when a plant is commissioned. It is a continuous engineering process in which technical expertise, demonstrable competence and asset integrity work together every day. Plants evolve, production processes are optimised, equipment is replaced, software is updated and operating conditions change. The real challenge is not to achieve compliance once, but to demonstrably maintain the original level of protection throughout the life of the installation.
That is why inspections, maintenance, technical documentation and effective Management of Change (MoC) are far more than administrative requirements. They are essential engineering tools for preserving the integrity and reliability of industrial assets. Not simply because legislation requires them, but because a stable and predictable installation forms the foundation for safe production, high availability and long-term business continuity.
Within the European Union, the ATEX Workplace Directive (1999/92/EC) requires employers to review explosion risks whenever processes, substances or equipment change. In the United Kingdom, the same principle is established under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR). In both jurisdictions, explosion safety is recognised as a lifecycle responsibility rather than a one-off compliance exercise.
Perhaps this is the greatest misconception about explosion safety. Its true value is not demonstrated when an explosion is controlled—it is demonstrated when an explosion never occurs. Behind that apparent normality lies decades of engineering excellence, technical discipline and professional asset integrity management. That is why explosion safety should not be viewed merely as a compliance obligation, but as an investment in reliability, asset availability and the long-term continuity of the business.
